Washing Machine Wont Turn On? Causes, Fixes & Glasgow Help

Completely dead, or lights on but nothing happens? A washing machine that will not start is often something simple — work through these before you pay anyone.

What causes it

  • Power — tripped socket, blown plug fuse, or a tripped RCD in your fuse box
  • Door not latched — it will not start until the door clicks fully shut
  • Faulty door interlock (the machine thinks the door is open)
  • Paused, locked or child-locked cycle
  • Failed control board or mains lead

Quick checks you can do yourself

Plug something else into the same socket to rule the socket out. Check the plug fuse and your fuse box for a tripped switch. Make sure the door clicks firmly shut — a worn latch is a common culprit. Check you have not left it on a child lock or paused mid-cycle (hold the start button a few seconds).

Is it worth calling someone out?

A door interlock is around £80–£130. But if the control board has gone, you are often looking at £150–£280 — usually more than an older machine is worth. That is the point to stop and think about the cheaper option below.
