Banging, grinding or a loud rumble on the spin? Some causes are quick fixes — but one is the classic “just replace it” fault, so it’s worth knowing which you’ve got.
What causes it
- Worn drum bearings — a loud grinding/rumbling that gets worse on the spin. The big one.
- A foreign object (coin, underwire, button) caught in the drum or pump
- Unbalanced or overloaded drum
- Worn shock absorbers / suspension
- Transit bolts never removed after delivery
Quick checks you can do yourself
Check the drum seal and pump filter for trapped coins or wires. Make sure the load is balanced and the machine is level and not touching a wall. Confirm the transit bolts were removed.
Is it worth calling someone out?
If it’s a deep grinding on spin, it’s almost certainly drum bearings — a big strip-down job at £180–£300, often more than the machine is worth. This is the number-one “don’t repair it, replace it” fault — and renting a serviced machine is usually the smarter money.
Not worth fixing? There is a cheaper way.
Rent a fully serviced washing machine from £25/month across Glasgow and the West of Scotland — delivered and installed this week, all repairs included. You speak to Alex, not a call centre.
