Laundry trapped behind a door that won’t open is maddening — but it’s often something simple. Work through these before assuming the worst.
What causes it
- The cycle hasn’t finished or is paused — the door stays locked until it’s done
- There’s still water in the drum — it won’t unlock until it has drained
- The safety lock delay — many machines keep the door locked for 2–3 minutes after a cycle ends
- Child lock is on
- Faulty door interlock or broken handle
Quick checks you can do yourself
First, wait 2–3 minutes after the cycle ends — the lock often releases on its own. Make sure it has actually drained (a drum with water won’t open — run a drain/spin). Check you haven’t left it paused or on a child lock. Try switching it off at the wall for a minute. Still stuck? Behind the filter flap at the bottom-front there’s usually an emergency release tab or cord to pop the door.
Is it worth calling someone out?
If it’s a failed door interlock or handle, that’s around £80–£130 fitted. On an older machine that’s had other faults, spending that is rarely worth it.
