Clothes coming out cold and not properly clean? Your machine is washing but not heating the water — one of the more expensive faults, so it’s worth knowing before you commit to a repair.
What causes it
- Faulty heating element — by far the most common cause
- Faulty thermostat or temperature (NTC) sensor
- Control board fault
Quick checks you can do yourself
There’s not much safe DIY on a heating fault — it’s inside the machine. You can confirm it, though: run a hot (60°C) cycle and carefully feel the door glass after 20–30 minutes — it should be warm. If it stays stone cold, the element has almost certainly failed.
Is it worth calling someone out?
A heating element is around £110–£180 fitted; a control-board fault is more. On an older machine, that’s a lot to spend on a machine that may fail elsewhere next — a strong case for renting a serviced one instead.
