A puddle under the washing machine is one to sort quickly — water and electrics do not mix, and a slow leak can wreck flooring. Here is how to find the source.
What causes it
- Perished door seal (front-loaders) — cracks or trapped grit
- Loose or split hoses at the back
- Overflowing detergent drawer — blocked, or too much detergent
- Cracked sump hose or tub
- Failed pump seal
Quick checks you can do yourself
Where is the water coming from tells you a lot. From the front/door — check the rubber door seal for tears or a trapped coin. From the back — check the fill and drain hose connections are tight and not split. From underneath mid-cycle — that points to the tub or pump. Also try less detergent and clean out the drawer; over-sudsing causes plenty of “leaks”.
Is it worth calling someone out?
A door seal is around £100–£160 fitted. A cracked tub or internal pump seal is a big strip-down — rarely worth it on an older machine. If it is leaking from deep inside and the machine has a few years on it, replacing beats repairing.
