You open the door and the clothes are soaking — the machine washed but never spun. Here is what is behind it.
What causes it
- Unbalanced load — one heavy item; the machine refuses to spin for safety
- It is not draining — a machine will not spin until the water is gone
- Worn drive belt
- Worn motor brushes
- Faulty door interlock — it will not spin if it thinks the door is open
- Control board fault
Quick checks you can do yourself
First, redistribute the load — spread items out and try a spin-only cycle. Next, make sure it is actually draining (a full drum will never spin — see our drainage guide). Check the door is clicking firmly shut. If it drains fine, the load is balanced, and it still will not spin, the fault is mechanical.
Is it worth calling someone out?
A drive belt is a moderate job. But motor brushes, worn drum bearings or a control board are the expensive ones — £180–£300 — and on an older machine that is firmly into “just replace it” territory.
