What a washing machine repair actually costs

Before you say yes to any repair, know the real numbers. A local engineer call-out is typically £80–£120 just to walk through the door and diagnose it — and that is before parts. Add the part on top and a lot of “simple” repairs land between £120 and £250.

  • Blocked pump or drain: often £90–£150 fixed
  • Door seal / gasket: £100–£160
  • Heating element: £110–£180
  • Drum bearings: £180–£300 (big strip-down job)
  • Main control board (PCB): £150–£280 — frequently more than the machine is worth

When a repair IS worth it

Fixing it is usually the smart move when all of these are true: the machine is under about four or five years old, it is a decent repairable brand (Bosch, Hotpoint, a solid Beko), it is the first fault it has had, and the quote is a small fraction of what a replacement would cost. A £90 pump on a two-year-old machine? Fix it, no question.

When it is NOT worth it

Walk away from the repair when the machine is six-plus years old, when it is the second or third thing to go, or when the quote is £180+ on a machine that cost £300 new. Bearings and control boards are the classic “just buy a new one” jobs — you pay £250 today and something else fails six months later. That is the trap.

The third option most people never think of

Everyone assumes it is a straight choice: pay to repair, or pay £300–£600 for a new one. There is a third way that is cheaper than both — rent a fully serviced machine. For from £25 a month I deliver a PAT-tested machine, plumb it in, and cover every repair for as long as you rent it. No £120 diagnosis gamble, no £400 outlay, and if it ever fails I fix or swap it — that is my problem, not yours.
